Before applying for ESTA, you need to make sure you meet all the ESTA requirements<\/strong>. Not everyone is eligible — the Electronic System for Travel Authorization is only available to citizens of specific countries who meet certain passport and travel criteria.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\n

Who Is Eligible for ESTA?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n

To be eligible for ESTA, you must meet all<\/strong> of the following requirements:<\/p>\r\n\r\n

  1. You hold a passport from one of the 42 Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries<\/strong><\/li>\r\n
  2. Your passport is an e-passport<\/strong> (biometric passport with an electronic chip)<\/li>\r\n
  3. Your trip to the US is for tourism, business, or transit<\/strong> only<\/li>\r\n
  4. You plan to stay in the US for 90 days or less<\/strong><\/li>\r\n
  5. You are traveling to the US by air or sea<\/strong> (not by land from Canada or Mexico)<\/li>\r\n
  6. You have not been denied a US visa or ESTA previously (without resolving the issue)<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n

    If you do not meet any of these requirements, you will need to apply for a US visa<\/strong> instead of ESTA.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

    Passport Requirements for ESTA<\/h2>\r\n\r\n

    Your passport is the most critical requirement for an ESTA application. CBP has strict requirements about the type and condition of your passport.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\n

    E-Passport (Biometric Passport) Required<\/h3>\r\n\r\n

    Since April 1, 2016, all ESTA applicants must have an e-passport<\/strong>. An e-passport contains an electronic chip that stores your biometric information and passport data. You can identify an e-passport by the small gold camera\/chip symbol on the front cover.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
